The optimal reaction conditions for this reaction are acidic pH and high viscosity, which may be due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the reactants. 9-Bromophenanthrene has also been used as a fluorescence probe for DNA and protein detection. It can be used to detect proteins by labeling them with a fluorescent dye and detecting their fluorescence emission. The dye will attach to proteins with hydrogen bonds, where it can then emit light at a wavelength different from its excitation wavelength.
