Butyl 3-aminobenzoate is a synthetic gas sensor that can be used to detect the presence of ammonia, amines, and alcohols. The device consists of a sensing film composed of polystyrene (PS) or copolymerized PS with an electron-donating matrix polymer. Irradiation and subsequent thermal treatment convert the butyl 3-aminobenzoate into a film containing 3-aminobenzoic acid. This reaction generates hydrogen ions and amine groups in the sensing film, which are sensitive to pH changes. The device can be used to detect ammonia concentrations as low as 10 ppm in air.
