4-Benzylpyrrolidin-2-one is a hydrogen bond donor that binds to the amide group of proteins and regulates their activity. The physiological activities of 4-benzylpyrrolidin-2-one are thought to be due to its ability to bind with carbonyl groups on proteins, which may regulate their function. 4-Benzylpyrrolidin-2-one is also able to form a hydrogen bond with an alkene or halide, which can affect the stereochemical structure of the molecule. It has been shown that 4-benzylpyrrolidin-2-one can mutate under specific conditions.
