2-Bromo-N,N-dimethylbutanamide is a reversible and tautomeric compound that can exist as two different structures. The two structures are called the keto form and the enol form. The keto form is more stable than the enol form. Spectroscopy has shown that the keto form absorbs light at a higher wavelength than the enol form. Halides can be added to 2-bromo-N,N-dimethylbutanamide to alter its structure from the keto to the enol or vice versa. This transformation occurs in an acid base reaction with heat and agitation to dissolve the halide salt.
