5-Bromo-2-hydrazinopyridine is a potent anticancer drug that inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA. It is used for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia. 5-Bromo-2-hydrazinopyridine has been shown to be active against cancer cells in culture and has demonstrated antitumor activity in vivo. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of DNA polymerase II, which is responsible for the synthesis of DNA. This leads to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction. 5-Bromo-2-hydrazinopyridine also binds to terminal alkynes, which are intermediates in the production of polymers that are implicated in carcinogenesis. It inhibits this process by binding to a critical site on the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and thereby preventing its activation by acetaldehyde.
