1H-Benzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid is a hydrophilic compound that is used in sunscreens. It has been synthesised and shown to be insoluble in water, making it a good candidate for use as a sunscreen. The protonated form of the molecule is UV-absorbing and can absorb light in the UVB range, which makes it effective for protection against burns from the sun. It has also been shown to have allergic reactions in some people, so should be used with caution. 1H-Benzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid has been studied structurally through techniques such as X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
