9-Benzyl-9H-purin-6-ol is an isomer of the purine nucleoside. It is synthesized by reacting a benzaldehyde with an aminopurine, such as 9H-purin-6-amine. The reaction product is purified by recrystallization and then reacted with methyl methacrylate to form the imidazole ring. Acrylic acid is added to produce the acrylonitrile derivative. This compound can be hydrolyzed to produce 9H-purin-6-ol or further modified to form other derivatives, for example, methyl ester, butyl ester, or salts.
