4-Bromophthalonitrile is an organic compound that is used to produce xylene. It can be synthesized in the liquid phase by reacting sodium salts with amide in the presence of a nucleophilic agent. The reaction produces 4-bromophthalonitrile and ammonium chloride as a byproduct. 4-Bromophthalonitrile has a number of potential uses, including use as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and explosives.
4-Bromophthalonitrile has been shown to react with nitric acid to form bromobenzene and nitrous oxide gas. The reaction proceeds through a nucleophilic attack on the double bond between the two carbon atoms in the molecule.
