5-Bromopyrimidin-4(1H)-one is an atypical amine that is used in the synthesis of orotic acid. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of rat liver microsomes and orotate phosphoribosyltransferase. It has been proposed as a potential anti-cancer drug due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme phenolphthalein, which is involved in the biosynthesis of purines. 5-Bromopyrimidin-4(1H)-one may also be used in tandem with other compounds for the treatment of bacterial infections, such as those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
