5-Bromo-2-chloro-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine is an organic solvent that is used to reduce ethyl alcohol to ethane. It has been shown to be toxic and should be handled with caution. The reaction is carried out in a three-necked flask containing a solution of sodium bicarbonate in ethanol. Zinc powder is added as a catalyst and the mixture is refluxed for about 2 hours. If desired, the product may be crystallized from tetrahydrofuran by adding petroleum ether or hexane followed by cooling and stirring.
