tert-Butyl 2-cyanoacetate is an industrial chemical that is prepared by the acetylation of phenol. It is used as a site-specific reagent in organic synthesis. It can be used to synthesize alkenes through a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction with anilines. Tert-butyl 2-cyanoacetate also undergoes a reductive hydrolysis to form cyanoacetate and tert-butanol when reacted with hydrochloric acid. This chemical has been isolated in low yields, but its NMR spectra have been characterized and the synthesis methods have been described.
