Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown that sec-butylbenzene exists as two different conformers, laminar and kinetic. The laminar conformer is more stable than the kinetic conformer because it does not contain any steric strain from substituents on the benzene ring. The activation energies for this reaction are 28 kJ/mol for the laminar conformer and 34 kJ/mol for the kinetic conformer.
