Bromochloroacetic acid is a hydrolyzate of bromochloroacetonitrile. It is used as a model system for keratin and has been shown to be potent inducers of nuclear DNA synthesis and plasma mass spectrometry. Bromochloroacetic acid has been shown to be toxic, but not carcinogenic, in mice. The toxicity of this compound appears to be due to its ability to form fluoroacetic acid and bromochloroacetonitrile in the liver. Bromochloroacetic acid also has a disulfide bond that may contribute to its toxicity by increasing the rate of metabolism and elimination.
