4-tert-Butylcyclohexanol is a synthetic compound and a mixture of cis and trans isomers. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other chemical compounds, as well as a solvent for paints, varnishes, lacquers, and oil field chemicals. This compound has been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. 4-tert-Butylcyclohexanol can be synthesized using the reaction mechanism shown below:
Diphosphine (P) reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to form hydrogen chloride (HCl), which reacts with cyclohexanol (CHOH) to form 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol (CHCH(CH)(OH)) and diphosphine oxide (PO). The product can be purified by distillation or crystallization.
