2-tert-Butylthiophene is an isomer of thiophene that has been used as a ligand in photochemical reactions. It has also been used in the synthesis of other organic compounds, such as arenes and chlorides. 2-tert-Butylthiophene is a proton acceptor and can be used to sensitize photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been shown to have the ability to convert solar energy into electrical energy when paired with a catalyst, such as boron trifluoride etherate. 2-tert-Butylthiophene can also be used for x-ray crystallography studies of chloride and hydrogen chloride molecules.
