N,N'-Bis(2,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide is a liquid crystal compound that has been shown to have immunological properties. It has been used in the study of molecular interactions with cells and cell physiology. The molecule is believed to be able to alter the shape of the cell membrane by binding to it and altering its permeability. N,N'-Bis(2,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide also has an ability to act as a light emitter. This property can be observed when the molecule is added to a transistor or polymer film and then illuminated with fluorescent light.
