3-Bromo-5-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride (3-BPC) is a pyridine compound that has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis in cancer cell lines. 3-BPC is also able to inhibit the proliferation of various types of viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and adenovirus type 5 (AdV). This compound is synthesized by the reaction of ethylene with hydrogen peroxide, followed by hydrolysis. 3-BPC hydrochloride can be used as a reagent for the synthesis of other compounds. It can also be converted into an n-oxide form that has antiviral activity.
