5-Benzylthio-1H-tetrazole is a monomer with high specificity, which can be immobilized on solid supports. It has been used in the synthesis of antiviral agents and bifunctional molecules. 5-Benzylthio-1H-tetrazole is a coreceptor antagonist that competes with HIV gp120 for binding to CD4, preventing the virus from entering CD4 cells. The molecule also inhibits the interaction between gp120 and cytidine deaminase, an enzyme that converts cytidine to uridine. This stepwise process inhibits the synthesis of viral DNA, leading to cell death by apoptosis.
