Benzoic acid is a carboxylic acid that is found naturally in many plants, fruits and vegetables. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial growth by binding to the glycan moiety of peptidoglycans. Benzoic acid can be used as a calibrant for mass spectrometry.
