Benzo[b]thiophene-3-acetonitrile is a synthetic compound that has shown potent inhibition of cancer in animals. It belongs to the group of quinoline derivatives and has been tested for its effects on Gram-negative bacteria. This chemical is also able to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, by inhibiting their cell wall synthesis. The acetonitrile moiety of benzo[b]thiophene-3-acetonitrile is the most potent inhibitor of bacterial growth, although it does not have any effect on human cells. Benzo[b]thiophene-3-acetonitrile can be used as an anti-cancer agent in humans and may be useful in cases where other treatments fail.
