Barium oxide is a white, odorless, crystalline substance that is insoluble in water. It has a melting point of 807°C and a boiling point of 1828°C. Barium oxide is an oxidation catalyst and can be used to oxidize sodium carbonate to produce sodium bicarbonate. The biological properties of barium oxide are not well known, but it has been shown that it can be used as a radiation-sensitive material for the treatment of tumors. Barium oxide has been used as an optical sensor for nitrates and other chemicals in reaction solutions because it emits light when excited by radiation. The emission spectrum peaks at 514 nm with a wavelength of 40 nm.
