Benzyl methacrylate is a methacrylate that undergoes a reaction with benzyl groups and methyl ethyl under the influence of radiation to form polymeric matrices. Benzyl methacrylate was shown to be an effective model system for studying the effects of carbonyl group, particle, hydrogen bond, and hydroxyl group on the polymerization process. The chemical reactions are initiated by the presence of a catalyst such as palladium chloride or copper sulfate.
