1,8-Bis(maleimido)triethyleneglycol (BMTEG) is a synthetic compound that is used to highlight DNA in the laboratory. It reacts with the protein components of cells and binds to the fatty acid chains in cell membranes, thus creating a crosslink between proteins and lipids. BMTEG has been shown to inhibit apoptosis in cells by preventing the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria. This prevents activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose). The reaction solution for this compound consists of 100 mM potassium phosphate buffer, pH 7.5, 2% Tween 20, and 1 mM EDTA. BMTEG is typically used in transfection experiments on damaged cells or cell cultures.
