Bis-1,7-(trimethylammonium)hepyl dibromide is an alkylation agent. It undergoes a reaction with alcohols to produce ethers, which are used as solvents and plasticizers. Bis-1,7-(trimethylammonium)hepyl dibromide can also be used in the production of polymers and pharmaceuticals. The isomerization of n-dimethyl formamide can be catalyzed by bis-1,7-(trimethylammonium)hepyl dibromide. This chemical has been shown to catalyze the conversion of formamide to formaldehyde at low concentrations. The reaction rate increases as the concentration of formamide increases and is inhibited by aluminium and germanium compounds.
