(2-Bromoethyl)trimethylammonium bromide is a cationic surfactant that can be used as a fluorescence probe for the detection of biological samples. The compound binds to anionic surfaces, such as proteins and nucleic acids, due to its lipophilic character. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of receptors in a model system. (2-Bromoethyl)trimethylammonium bromide is also used as a ferroelectric material at high temperatures and can be used in nutrient solutions to promote cell growth. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the binding of diazonium salt to DNA and protein synthesis in kidney bean cells.
