Butacaine sulphate is a local anaesthetic that belongs to the group of ester-type local anaesthetics. It is used as an analytical reagent in pharmacology and biology, where it can be used to study membrane interactions. Butacaine sulphate is also used as a pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of pain in animals. The isolated heart experiments demonstrated that butacaine sulphate affects membrane potential and adenine nucleotide content at the mitochondrial level. The effects of butacaine sulphate on corynebacterium glutamicum are related to its uptake, which is dependent on the pH optimum. Butacaine sulphate has been shown to inhibit fatty acid and hydroxyl group synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme acyl coenzyme A synthetase.
