D-Buthionine is a diastereomer of buthionine, which is the most abundant amino acid in the body. D-Buthionine has been shown to induce death in animals through a pathway that involves glutamate and calcium. Its effect on the pancreas has been studied in vitro and it has been shown to be effective against isomers of glutamate synthetase. The role of D-buthionine in nerve cells has also been studied and it may have an important role in the synthesis of proteins necessary for cell division.
