The 2-bromocinnamaldehyde has been shown to be effective against intracellular Ca2+ levels by inhibiting the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger, which leads to an increase in mitochondrial functions. It also has been shown to be genotoxic, as it inhibits diphenolase activity and is capable of inducing DNA strand breaks in mononuclear cells. The 2-bromocinnamaldehyde has been shown to have fatty acid metabolism-related effects, such as the inhibition of the enzyme acetyl CoA carboxylase and the induction of peroxisome proliferation.
