4-Benzyloxycarbonyl-2-piperazinone is a benzyl ester that is synthesized from piperazine. Piperazine reacts with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydride to produce the desired product. The reaction mixture is then heated to yield the desired 4-benzyloxycarbonyl-2-piperazinone. This method of synthesis can be used to produce other benzylic alcohols, such as 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol.
