N,N'-Bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)urea is a potassium-containing solvent that can be used as a reaction medium for organic synthesis. It is also used in the purification of ethylene and to remove particulates from emission gases. N,N'-Bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)urea has been shown to degrades into 2-ethoxyethanol and urea upon exposure to sunlight or heat. This degradation process yields nitrosamines which may pose a health risk to humans. N,N'-Bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)urea should be handled with care and stored in cool places to prevent the formation of nitrosamines.
