The compound is soluble in water and alkylates DNA with formaldehyde. X-ray crystallography has shown that the compound forms a cyclic structure with a ring of oxygen atoms. This cyclic structure allows for ion exchange and magnetic properties, which are useful for ion chromatography and NMR spectroscopy.
