Bethanidine sulfate is a diagnostic agent that is used in the diagnosis of cardiac disease. Bethanidine sulfate is an analog of guanethidine, which is a cholinergic drug that has been used to control hypertension and as a dietary supplement for its diuretic effects. Bethanidine sulfate may be given by intramuscular injection or by intravenous infusion to patients with structural heart disease or to those who have had a myocardial infarction. This drug can be administered in the form of an intravenous injection at a dosage of 2-4 mg over 10-60 minutes. It can also be given orally as a tablet at doses ranging from 5-30 mg per day.
