4'-Bromo-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid is a monomer with a hydrocarbon group. It can be expressed from the reaction of cyclopentyl bromide and biphenyl in the presence of zinc powder in an organic solvent at elevated temperature. The product is a mixture of two isomers, 4'-bromo-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid and 4'-hydroxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid. The yield of this product is high and it has been found to be stable to dimerization and hydrogenation. 4'-Bromo-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid has also been found to have anisotropic properties that are dependent on the crystallinity of the sample.
