2-Bromobutyric acid is an ethyl ester of butyric acid. It reacts with sodium hydrogen in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid to form a butyl ester. This reaction can be conducted on a large scale, yielding high yields and efficiencies. The amide group can be cleaved by hydrolysis, yielding 2-bromobutyric acid and acetic acid. 2-Bromobutyric acid is used as a carbon source in the synthesis of fatty acids and in the amination reaction for the production of pharmaceuticals such as chloramphenicol acetyltransferase.
