4-[Bis(2-chloroethyl)aminophenyl]butyric acid is a bicyclic heterocycle that has been shown to be toxic to human epidermal cells. It binds to the integrin receptor on the cell surface, and initiates ATP-dependent transport, which leads to an influx of chloride ions into the cell. This influx alters the intracellular pH in a way that inhibits protein synthesis. 4-[Bis(2-chloroethyl)aminophenyl]butyric acid also has significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells, pluripotent cells, and even healthy human serum. Indeed, this compound is so potent that it was used in toxicity studies for other drugs such as chlorambucil.
