The peptidyl amino group has a nucleophilic character, which allows it to react with the carboxyl group of L-lysine and form an amide bond. N-Benzyloxycarbonyl-L-leucine was found to be effective at low doses in inhibiting the growth of P. aeruginosa, and may also have therapeutic potential for treating lymphocytic leukemia. This compound is racemized into its two stereoisomers, D-N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-leucine and L-N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-leucine, which have different effects on cell membranes.
