4-Bromo-2-methylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one is an exploratory drug candidate. It has been shown to bind to the bromodomain in the human protein BRD4, which is involved in gene transcription and protein synthesis. This compound has also been shown to have a significant inhibitory effect on cellular growth and proliferation at exposure levels that are below those necessary to induce cytotoxicity. 4-Bromo-2-methylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one is a member of a family of compounds that target the bromodomain and are being investigated as anticancer agents for tumors that overexpress BRD4, such as breast cancer or prostate cancer.
