4-Bromo-benzenebutanoic acid is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be effective in inducing apoptosis in glioblastoma cells. It does this by causing the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria and the activation of caspases, which are enzymes that cause cell death. 4-Bromo-benzenebutanoic acid also has a dehydrating effect on cells, which may lead to apoptosis. 4-Bromo-benzenebutanoic acid can be synthesized by cross coupling with phosphorus pentoxide and debrominating butyric acid with phosphorus pentoxide. The molecule also stains cells with aldehyde groups, such as annexin V, which are often found in apoptotic cells.
