3-Benzothienyl-L-alanine is a peptidomimetic that inhibits mitochondrial translation by binding to the ribosome in a similar manner as natural amino acids. 3-Benzothienyl-L-alanine has been shown to have anti-HIV activity and may be used as an analog of gp120. The peptidomimetic binds to the formyl group at position 37 of the proteins, blocking the synthesis of proteins vital for mitochondrial function. 3-Benzothienyl-L-alanine has been shown to inhibit translation in genetically engineered strains of Escherichia coli cells, with a potency comparable to that of natural amino acids. 3-Benzothienyl-L-alanine can also be synthesized using titration calorimetry and synthetic chemistry methods.
