Boc-S-acetamidomethyl-D-cysteine is an analog of the endogenous amino acid cysteine that mimics the pharmacological effects of enkephalins. It has been shown to inhibit the cAMP response, as well as elevate levels of glutamate and dopamine in the brain. Boc-S-acetamidomethyl-D-cysteine binds to opioid receptors and blocks the release of neurotransmitters, thus mediating its analgesic effects. This drug has been shown to be more potent than morphine in animal studies. Boc-S-acetamidomethyl-D-cysteine may also have a role in preventing seizures and convulsions.
