Boc-N-methyl-L-serine is an analog of L-serine that has significant antiplasmodial activity and can be used to treat malaria. It is an inhibitor of the parasite P. falciparum, which causes malaria, and it inhibits the biosynthesis of hematin, a compound that is vital for erythrocyte production. Boc-N-methyl-L-serine has been shown to inhibit the growth of P. falciparum in vitro and to have potent antiplasmodial activity against drug resistant strains such as K1, K2, and 3D7. This compound also has a class of drugs with similar structures in development that are currently undergoing optimization trials.
