Benzoyl-DL-phenylalanine is a phenylalanine analogue that inhibits the biosynthesis of hippuric acid. The synthesis of hippuric acid is catalyzed by the enzyme phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, which converts L-phenylalanine to 3-hydroxyhippuric acid. Benzoyl-DL-phenylalanine competes with L-phenylalanine for binding to the enzyme and thus inhibits the conversion of L-phenylalanine to 3-hydroxyhippuric acid. This compound has been shown to inhibit carbaryl (a pesticide) in vitro at concentrations between 10 and 50 μM. In vivo studies have demonstrated that benzoyl-DL-phenylalanine is not toxic to rats at doses up to 2 g/kg.
The molecular weight of benzoyl-DL-phenylalanine is 258.2 Daltons, and its molecular formula is C9
