Enduracididine is a molecule that inhibits dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) and is orally active. Enduracididine is synthesized from the amino acid proline by an enzymatic process, which requires a number of impurities. The synthetic process for enduracididine starts with the chemoenzymatic synthesis of L-alanyl-L-cysteine methyl ester, followed by the coupling of this compound with L-proline to yield enduracididine. Enduracididine's potent inhibition of DPP-4 has been shown in both cytosolic and plasma glucose levels in mice. The drug also decreases plasma glucose levels in diabetic rats and reduces hyperglycemia induced by streptozotocin.
