6-Bromo-2-tetralone is a chemical used for wastewater treatment. It is a ring-opening agent that is used to break down large molecules into smaller ones. 6-Bromo-2-tetralone has been shown to be effective in treating industrial waste water, which contains high levels of nitro and nitrite. The chemical can be used as an oxidant in the treatment of wastewater containing organic matter. 6-Bromo-2-tetralone is also a bioreactor additive that promotes bacterial growth by inhibiting the efflux pump, which removes toxic substances from cells. This allows more bacteria to grow and produce more enzymes, such as nitrate reductase, which breaks down nitrate into nitrogen gas and water. 6-Bromo-2-tetralone has also been shown to inhibit dopamine uptake, which may lead to antihistamine effects.
