Bismuth(III) chloride is a compound that has been used in wastewater treatment as an alternative to copper chloride. It is a strong inhibitor of nitrification, which can be attributed to the bismuth-chloride complex. The bismuth-chloride complex ionizes in acidic conditions and forms a soluble complex with chloride ions and water molecules. Bismuth(III) chloride has been shown to be more stable than copper(II) chloride, which has been found to form insoluble precipitates when exposed to sodium citrate or other organic materials.
