1-tert-Butyl-4-iodobenzene is a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon that has been shown to bind to the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase, which is responsible for the metabolism of glucose. This binding results in metabolic inhibition and cell death by apoptosis. It has been shown to be toxic in various animal models, with primary culture cells being most sensitive. The toxicity of 1-tert-butyl-4-iodobenzene has been shown to be due to its ability to bind with cellular substructures such as mitochondria and lysosomes.
