3-Bromo-4-iodotoluene is a peroxide that is used as a ligand, chelate ring, or transfer agent in biomolecular applications. It has been found to be an excellent substrate for magnesium and can be used as a fluorescent probe for chlorine. 3-Bromo-4-iodotoluene also forms covalent bonds with the triazoles and can be used as a phosphine donor. Fluorescence and diffraction experiments have shown that 3-bromo-4-iodotoluene has strong halogen bonding properties.
