1-Bromo-2-iodo-4-methylbenzene is a halogenated aromatic compound that reacts with nucleophiles such as amines, alcohols, and thiols to form 1-bromo-2-(N,N'-dialkylamino)benzenes. The reaction involves the electrophilic substitution of an electron pair from the nucleophile for one bromine atom. This reaction can be catalyzed by a variety of metal complexes including Cu(I), Fe(II), and Zn(II). Mechanistically, it is proposed that the metal complex first abstracts a proton from the substrate through coordination, then transfers this proton to the bromine atom to generate an electrophilic bromide intermediate.
