1-Benzyl-pyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid (1BPC) is a potent cytotoxic agent that inhibits the growth of tumor cells by inhibiting protein synthesis. It is a 17-OHP analog and has been shown to be effective in treating breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other hormone sensitive cancers. 1BPC binds to the active site on the 21β-hydroxylase enzyme and prevents it from converting progesterone into cortisol. This prevents the production of glucocorticoids, which are necessary for tumor cell proliferation. 1BPC also inhibits the production of progesterone, which is responsible for maintaining pregnancy in women. The compound was developed in an effort to find a replacement for cortisone, which can cause side effects such as diabetes mellitus and weight gain.
