Bis(tetrabutylammonium) dichromate is an ionic compound of a quaternary ammonium salt and a chromate anion. It has been used as a strong oxidizing agent for the preparation of pyridinium salts, potassium dichromate, and other organic compounds. This reagent is prepared by reaction of tetrabutylammonium bromide with chromic acid in water or alcohol. The active methylene group in bis(tetrabutylammonium) dichromate can be converted to an aldehyde or an aldoxime by irradiation with uv light.
